Howard Nelson, 87, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at the Villa St Vincent, Crookston, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, with Pastor Tim Self and Pastor Bert Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Friday, October 16, 2020, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Howard Seymore Nelson was born August 12, 1933, at home on the family farm in Agder Township, Marshall County, MN, to Seymore T. and Ethel (Kupperdahl) Nelson.

He attended school at Sunny Side School in rural Thief River Falls. He attended Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN.

Howard took care of the family farm as a young man while his father went away for work. He honorably served his country in the US Army from 1955 to 1957. He was stationed in different places in Germany. He returned to Minnesota and found work on the Iron Range in Minnesota. That is where he met his future wife Marjorie.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Kathryn Sanderson, June 14, 1958, in Lansing, IA. They made their home in Biwabik, and Aurora, MN.

In 1966, he moved to Thief River Falls, MN he worked for the City of Thief River Falls and ran heavy equipment for 29 years. He worked with all of the departments. Howard was the sexton of Greenwood Cemetery for 14 years in Thief River Falls, MN.

Howard enjoyed wintering in Arizona. He enjoyed fishing and searching with his metal detector. Howard had the ability to fix and repair anything. He was a jack of all trades. If he needed a part, he would often design and build it himself. He enjoyed whittling, woodworking, and gardening. The joy of his life were his grandkids and great-grandkids.

Howard’s love for the Lord started in 1961 when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was always waiting for the day when he would go to sleep and wake up in Heaven. God answered his prayer.

Howard is survived by his wife, Marjorie; 5 children, Robert (Maria) Nelson, Glendale, AZ, Thomas (Jenny) Nelson, Colorado Springs, CO, Sheri Nelson, Minot, ND, Scott (Pam) Nelson, Woodbury, MN, Kurt Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN; 6 grandchildren, Gabrielle, Andre, Alexa, Jordan, Cami, Caleb, and Ashley; great-granddaughters, Rylee and Jessa; sisters, Beverly (Robert) Petroski, Parkers Prairie, MN, and Elaine Lee, Breckenridge, MN; sisters-in-law, Kathy Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN and Sylvia Nelson of Thief River Falls, MN; many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Erika; brothers, Glen, Vernon, and Richard; sisters, Shirley Hagrenes, and Gloria Claven.
