If you drive by the area of Westside Motors, you may notice construction of a large tower, The tower  is dedicated for the ARMER public safety two way radio system. The National Weather Service and Pennington County will also have equipment on the tower. The ARMER system is a trunked, public safety radio system that covers all of Minnesota.

Construction of the structure consists of a 330foot,  three legged self-supporting tower, with no guy wires, all contained within the 75ft. x 75ft. fenced compound.  The foundation is a pad and pier design using an underground concrete foundation which is 44 and ½ feet square and 7 and ½ feet deep.

Structural Tower Services out of Becker, Minnesota is constructing the tower and will be utilizing a large crane to set the tower sections.

The new Thief River Falls tower site is a main hub for the ARMER network in the northwest area of the State and will be utilized by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, State Patrol, DNR, Pennington County, and all local fire, police, and EMS services.  Any public safety related services in this area can utilize the ARMER radio system after receiving the proper approvals.

The current Department of Transportation tower in Thief River Falls tower is located on Zeh Street at the old MnDOT District building.  The tower was constructed in the 50’s and has far exceeded it’s useful life.  The 300ft. tower will be dismantled when the new tower is “on air” and will be disposed of properly at the scrap yard.
